7OH vs Mitragynine: The Key Differences Explained - Official Dollar Tabs

Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are both alkaloids found in kratom leaf, and they are frequently mentioned in the same sentence. They are not interchangeable, and confusing them is the fastest way to have a bad experience with a product you thought you understood.

Why the potency gap exists

7-hydroxymitragynine is a minor alkaloid that happens to be considerably more active by weight than the plant’s dominant alkaloid. That is not unusual in plant chemistry – the compound present in the largest quantity is not always the one doing the most work.

The practical consequence is a difference in the scale people use. Mitragynine products are measured in tens or hundreds of milligrams. Concentrated 7OH products are measured in low single digits to tens of milligrams. A “50mg MIT” tablet and a “50mg 7OH” tablet are the same number on a label and nowhere near the same product.

Which should you start with?

If you are new to kratom alkaloids as a category, mitragynine is generally the more sensible place to begin – it is the alkaloid present in the leaf in meaningful quantity, and it is what most published kratom research focuses on. Our 50mg MIT tablets are pre-dosed, so there is no measuring involved.

7OH is a different proposition: concentrated, potent at low milligram amounts, and intended for adults who already understand the category and have made a deliberate decision. Read What is 7OH? in full before going near it.

Can you take both?

No – do not stack kratom alkaloid products. Combining 7OH with mitragynine is not a way to get a better result; it is a way to lose track of what you have taken. One product, one measured serving, one per day maximum.

What the research says

Mitragynine has been studied considerably more than 7OH, largely because it is the major alkaloid and therefore the natural focus of kratom science. Published work on both is preliminary – laboratory and animal models are not clinical evidence, and neither compound has an approved medical use anywhere.

We make no claims about effects for either. Any vendor who does is not being straight with you.
