What Is Mitragynine? The Primary Kratom Alkaloid
Mitragynine is the most abundant alkaloid in kratom leaf – and a very different product from 7OH. Here is what it is and how it fits in.
Mitragynine in one paragraph
Mitragynine (MIT) is the dominant alkaloid in the leaves of the kratom tree, accounting for roughly 60% of the total alkaloid content and typically around 1% to 1.5% of dried leaf weight. It is the compound that most of the world means when it discusses kratom, and it requires substantially higher milligram amounts than 7-hydroxymitragynine to produce a comparable experience. If you are new to kratom alkaloids, mitragynine – not 7OH – is generally the more sensible starting point.
Mitragynine vs 7OH – the difference that matters
| Mitragynine (MIT) | 7-OH | |
|---|---|---|
| Abundance in leaf | The major alkaloid, roughly 1-1.5% | A minor alkaloid, well under 0.1% |
| Typical milligram range | Tens to low hundreds of mg | Low single digits to tens of mg |
| Potency by weight | Lower | Considerably higher |
| Formats we sell | Tablets, powders, drink mix | Tablets, shots, powders |
| Sensible starting point | Often yes | Usually no |
The single most common mistake we see is a buyer treating “50mg MIT” and “50mg 7OH” as equivalent. They are not remotely close. Read What is 7OH? before comparing products.
How mitragynine is presented
Mitragynine tablets
Pre-dosed compressed tablets, which removes all measuring. Ours include 50mg MIT 25ct in strawberry or lemon, and the 150mg MIT hot chocolate – a drink mix format that dissolves in hot milk or water.
Mitragynine powder
Extract powder for people who measure their own servings. Our MIT powder 5 gram bundle ships as individually sealed jars so the bulk stays stable while you work through one. You will need a milligram scale.
Bundles
The Lemon MIT Bundle combines tablets and powder at a lower combined price than buying them separately.
What the research says – and what it does not
Mitragynine has been the subject of considerably more published laboratory and animal research than 7OH, largely because it is the major alkaloid and therefore the focus of most kratom science. That research is preliminary: laboratory and animal models are not clinical evidence, and there is no approved medical use for mitragynine.
We make no claims about effects. We are not aware of any clinical trial establishing mitragynine as a treatment for anything, and any vendor telling you otherwise is selling you a story rather than a fact. What we can tell you is what the product is, how much of it is in each unit, and where the lab report is.
Responsible use basics
- One serving per day maximum. Do not exceed the label.
- Do not combine with alcohol or any other central nervous system depressant.
- Do not drive or operate machinery on any day you have used a mitragynine product.
- Do not use if under 21, pregnant, nursing, or taking prescription medication without medical clearance.
- Do not use if you have a history of liver, kidney, heart or seizure disorders, or of substance use disorder.
- Tolerance and dependence are real. Kratom alkaloids can be habit forming. See the dosage guide for the honest version.
Where to start
New to kratom alkaloids? Start with a pre-dosed mitragynine tablet rather than powder, understand how you respond, and only then consider whether 7OH is something you want to explore at all. There is no prize for moving fast in this category.
