What Is 7OH? The Complete Guide to 7-Hydroxymitragynine
A plain-English explanation of 7-hydroxymitragynine: what it is, how it differs from kratom leaf and mitragynine, what the research actually shows, and how to use 7OH products responsibly.
1. What 7OH actually is
7OH is shorthand for 7-hydroxymitragynine, a naturally occurring alkaloid found in the leaves of the kratom tree, Mitragyna speciosa. It is one of dozens of alkaloids in the plant, but it is the one that appears in by far the smallest concentration in raw leaf – typically a fraction of one percent – while being the most pharmacologically active by weight.
That combination is the whole story of the 7OH market. Because there is so little of it in the leaf, you cannot get a meaningful amount by chewing leaves or steeping tea. You have to extract and concentrate it. That is what a “7OH tablet” is: a small pressed tablet containing a measured milligram dose of concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine, usually blended with a carrier and a flavour.
In plain terms: kratom leaf is the raw material, mitragynine is the most abundant alkaloid in that leaf, and 7OH is the minor alkaloid that is far more potent per milligram. If you want to understand the family properly, read What Is Mitragynine? and Kratom Alkaloids 101 alongside this page.
2. 7OH vs kratom leaf vs mitragynine
| Kratom leaf / powder | Mitragynine (MIT) | 7OH | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Dried, ground leaf | Most abundant leaf alkaloid | Minor alkaloid, highly concentrated |
| Typical dose | Grams | Tens to low hundreds of mg | Low single-digit to tens of mg |
| Concentration in leaf | n/a | Roughly 1-1.5% | Well under 0.1% |
| Format we sell | – | Tablets, powders, drink mix | Tablets, shots, powders |
| Good starting point? | Yes, for the cautious | Yes, for most adults | No – work up to it |
The practical takeaway: a 15mg 7OH tablet is not “15mg of kratom”. It is a concentrated alkaloid dose that bears no relation to the gram-level doses people use with leaf powder. Confusing the two is how people get into trouble.
3. Why the milligram matters so much
Because 7OH is potent at low milligram amounts, small differences matter. Moving from 12mg to 20mg is not a small step – it is close to a 70% increase in dose. This is why every product on our site lists the exact milligram content per tablet on the label and on the product page, and why we sell a 0.001g milligram scale for anyone working with powder.
Never take a second dose because “the first one has not kicked in yet”. Oral and sublingual 7OH can take a while to come on, and stacking doses before the first has taken effect is the most common cause of a bad experience. Wait it out. Full detail in the 7OH dosage guide.
4. The four 7OH formats and when to use each
Nano tablets
The default format, and the one we recommend for most people. A nano-pressed tablet dissolves quickly under the tongue and is dosed at the factory, so there is no measuring and no variance. See our 7OH tablets – 12mg mango, 18mg orange, 20mg fruit punch, 30mg grape, 50mg cherry.
Liquid shots
Fastest onset, easiest to carry, completely discreet. Each bottle holds multiple measured servings. Ideal for people who travel or who dislike the taste of a dissolving tablet. See the 60mg 7OH shots, 12 pack and our 7OH shots guide.
Extract powder
The cheapest cost per milligram and the most demanding format. You must own a calibrated scale and you must use it every single time. This is for experienced users only. See 89% 7OH powder and our 7OH powder guide.
Bundles
Not a format so much as a buying strategy: buy several units at once and the per-unit price falls. See the Dollar Trio 300ct and the 7OH Bundle.
5. What the research does and does not show
7-hydroxymitragynine has been studied in laboratory and animal models, and the published work points toward activity at opioid receptors. That is the honest summary of the science, and it is also the reason regulators are paying attention to this category.
What that means for you: because the mechanism is what it is, the same cautions that apply to any substance acting on those receptors apply here – tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, and a real risk of respiratory depression when combined with alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids or other central nervous system depressants.
6. Tolerance, dependence and withdrawal – the honest version
If you use 7OH regularly, tolerance develops. The same dose stops producing the same effect, and the temptation is to raise it. That path has an end point, and it is not a good one.
Signs you should stop and reassess
- You are taking it more often than you planned to.
- You are taking it to feel normal rather than to feel anything in particular.
- You have raised your dose more than once because the old one stopped working.
- You feel unwell when you miss a dose.
- You are hiding it from people close to you.
Any of those is a signal, not a moral failure. The responsible move is to pause, taper rather than stop abruptly, and speak to a licensed healthcare professional. We would rather lose a repeat customer than contribute to a problem.
If you are struggling with dependence on kratom products or any substance, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential and available 24/7 in the US: 1-800-662-4357.
7. Is 7OH legal?
It depends entirely on where you live, and it is changing. In the United States, 7OH is not a federally scheduled substance, but several individual states and some cities have restricted or banned it, and several more are actively considering it. Outside the US the picture varies from fully legal to outright banned.
It is your responsibility to check your own jurisdiction before ordering – not ours to guess for you. Our 7OH legality guide explains the current position state by state in the US and covers the main international markets, and we will not ship to jurisdictions where these products are prohibited.
8. How to buy 7OH without getting burned
- Demand a lab report. Ask for the certificate of analysis for the exact batch. If a vendor cannot produce one, they do not know what they are selling either. Ours are on the Lab Results page.
- Check the milligram is stated on the product, not just the marketing. “Extra strength” is not a number.
- Compare cost per milligram, not cost per bag. A cheap 25-count bag can be worse value than an expensive 100-count bag. We break this down on Why Buy From Us.
- Start at the bottom of the range. If you are new, 12mg, not 50mg.
- Buy from someone who tells you the uncomfortable parts. Any vendor who says “no withdrawal, no tolerance, completely safe” is selling you a story.
