If you have searched for kratom products recently you have run into the term 7-hydroxymitragynine, usually shortened to 7OH. It is the alkaloid that reshaped the entire kratom category, and it is also the one most often misunderstood by first-time buyers.
Here is the version without the marketing.
What 7-hydroxymitragynine actually is
7-hydroxymitragynine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, the kratom tree. It occurs in the plant in extremely small amounts – well under 0.1% of dried leaf weight – but it is considerably more potent by weight than mitragynine, which is the plant’s most abundant alkaloid.
That combination is why the product exists in the form it does. You cannot get a meaningful amount of 7OH by chewing leaves or brewing tea, because there is simply not enough of it in the leaf. It has to be extracted and concentrated. A 7OH tablet is therefore a small pressed tablet containing a measured milligram dose of concentrated alkaloid – not kratom, and not a strong version of kratom.
The distinction that matters most
The most common and most dangerous misunderstanding in this category is treating “15mg of 7OH” as if it meant “15mg of kratom”. It does not. Kratom leaf powder is used in gram quantities. Concentrated 7OH is used in low milligram quantities. That is a difference of roughly a thousand times, and it is why pre-dosed, milligram-labelled products exist in the first place.
If you want the full technical comparison, our complete 7OH guide covers it in depth, and the mitragynine guide explains the other side of the coin.
The formats you will see
- Nano tablets – pre-dosed, dissolve under the tongue, no measuring required. The right starting point for most people. See 7OH tablets.
- Liquid shots – fastest onset, most portable, multiple servings per bottle. See 7OH shots.
- Extract powder – lowest cost per milligram, highest demand on the user. Requires a calibrated milligram scale.
- Bundles – not a format, but the cheapest way to buy any of the above. See bundles.
Four things every first-time buyer should know
1. The milligram is the whole conversation
Because 7OH is potent at low milligram amounts, the step from 12mg to 20mg is roughly a 70% increase in dose – not a rounding error. Always compare products by their stated alkaloid content and by cost per milligram, never by the size of the bag.
2. Start at the bottom of the range
If you are new to concentrated 7OH, the sensible entry point is the lowest strength available – our 12mg mango tablets – not 30mg or 50mg. There is no prize for starting high.
3. Never stack doses
Sublingual and oral 7OH does not hit instantly. Taking a second dose because the first has not taken effect yet is the single most common cause of a bad experience. Take one measured dose, then wait.
4. It can be habit forming
This is stated plainly because it is true. Regular use produces tolerance; sustained use can produce dependence. Read our dosage guide before your first use, not after.
What we will not tell you
We will not tell you that 7OH treats pain, anxiety, fatigue or anything else. There is no approved clinical use for it, and any vendor making therapeutic claims is telling you what they think you want to hear rather than what is true. Our products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
