Buyers ask for an expiry date. The more useful answer is that shelf life is determined by conditions rather than by the calendar – and you control most of the variables.
The four degrading factors
- Moisture – the most aggressive. Causes softening, clumping, and accelerates potency loss.
- Heat – accelerates every chemical degradation pathway. A hot car is the worst-case environment.
- Light – UV degrades alkaloids and drives discolouration.
- Oxygen – oxidation begins as soon as packaging is opened, and continues with repeated exposure.
How format changes the picture
| Format | Exposure profile | Storage demand |
|---|---|---|
| Tablets | Moderate – sealed barrier pouch | Low to moderate |
| Shots | Low – sealed bottle, resealable | Low |
| Powder | High – large surface area per use | High |
Powder is the demanding one
Powder exposes more surface area to air and moisture with every opening. Two things reduce that to a manageable problem:
- Split into smaller sealed portions. Use one jar at a time – which is why our MIT powder bundle ships that way.
- Work quickly and reseal immediately. Not “in a minute”. Immediately.
Practical conditions
| Condition | Do | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Room temperature, stable | Hot cars, radiators, near ovens |
| Humidity | Dry cupboard | Bathroom, kitchen, laundry |
| Light | Original light-blocking packaging | Direct sun, clear containers |
| Access | Locked container | Open shelf, low cupboard |
What testing tells you about the batch, not the future
A certificate of analysis tells you what was in the product when it was tested – measure the potency, purity and contaminants at that point. It does not predict how the product will behave after six months on a sunny windowsill. That is why storage discipline stays your responsibility after purchase. See how to read a COA.
Signs your storage is failing
- Tablets softening or fusing together
- Powder clumping or caking
- Discolouration
- An altered smell
- Flavour noticeably faded
- Any mould – discard the entire container
The practical rule
If storage is easy for you, buy larger quantities and save. If you know you will leave a pouch in a car or a humid bathroom, buy smaller quantities more often. See when bulk buying makes sense.
